There are measures for clickouts, but none for load time, so there's neither incentive to optimize, nor disincentive to look creative and maybe win some awards. Besides, where is a visitor to go, to another 'fiddled' site? I also abandon a site when pop-ups repeatedly intrude, especially those that claim to be usability surveys but are clearly aimed at gathering fodder for ad sales. Three months later, the site is slower and more cluttered, if anything.
